Oturere Valley is part of the Northern Circuit Walk in Tongariro National Park. Recent images from a visit there are shown in the ‘Recent Images’ Gallery. This place has a desert like moonscape, and in the mist or early morning light there is a special beauty in the rocky emptiness of the place. Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro sit on the skyline like looming shadows…
Access is via the Northern Circuit walk or one can walk (scrabble!!) down the steep rough track from the Tongariro Crossing. Just be careful to step carefully if you have a heavy pack – almost easier going up than down!
The Oturere Hut (run by Department of Conservation) is around 4-5 kilometers along the valley floor from the Crossing descent.
